Desktop Manageability and Security
Desktop Manageability and Security talks about the challenges
common with Enterprise Desktops and how DSI helps address those issues.
Which challenges do we face with Enterprise Desktops?
Application compatibility is a fourfold challenge - (1) application to OS compatibility,
(2) Legacy application compatibility (3) application to application compatibility
(4) tools and guidance to accelerate deployment
PC manageability can be quite daunting as well. More than 70% of the total cost
of ownership of a desktop is spent on operational activities associated with
managing the PC, managing end users, hardware maintenance and repairs, provisioning
and upgrading PCs, and software installations. With PCs so dispersed across
an organization and with so many of them, IT struggles to keep track of those
devices, keep them patched and updated, and troubleshoot connectivity issues.
There is a wide variety among the hardware. Every different hardware
configuration requires a different disk image, and all of these images must
be managed and updated.
Increasingly, there are substantial end user populations who conduct much of
their computing remotely, either in home offices, or in small branch offices
that may not have the same protections common to datacenters. A lack of control
over enterprise desktops in those situations means that there is an increased
risk from loss of confidential data, viruses, and potential threats from other
malware. These security risks are compounded for companies with compliance concerns
arising from regulations that require vigilance in protecting private information.
Requirements in the U.S., EU, and elsewhere require safeguards to ensure the
security and confidentiality of customer records and information. It is a challenge
to control end users enough to reduce these risks.
Today more than ever, companies are being mandated to do more
with the existing resources or even reduced resources. Desktop and user management
must be able to scale to meet the needs of a rapidly evolving business environment
and workforce. As conditions change, it is essential that businesses think strategically
about desktop management to ensure that their workers get the resources they
need to efficiently do their jobs. Regardless of where they are located, it's
practically guaranteed that workers will need IT support at some point. IT needs
to be in a position where they can provide their users with high levels of service.

What is the DSI proposed solution to the above mentioned
challenges?
DSI introduced Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). VDI is an
integrated desktop virtualization solution that delivers enterprise-class control
and manageability with a familiar user experience. VDI, built on industry leading
and proven virtualization platform, provides new levels of efficiency and reliability
for your virtual desktop environment.
This comprehensive desktop virtualization solution lets you replace traditional
PCs with virtual machines that you can manage from the data center in order
to:
- Extend powerful DSI Infrastructure 3 capabilities - With VDI,
you get the proven DSI Infrastructure 3 software such as desktop business continuity,
high availability and disaster recovery capabilities that until now were available
only for mission-critical server applications.
- Streamline desktop management to reduce operating costs and increase control
- Organizations worldwide use VDI to streamline desktop management, increase
security, and reduce costs. Using VDI, the time it takes to deploy a desktop
is typically reduced to minutes, optimizing the value of IT resources and getting
end users productive faster.
- Deliver complete desktop environments with greater application compatibility
- With VDI, end users get a complete, unmodified virtual desktop that behaves
just like a normal PC. There is no change to the applications or desktop environment,
no application sharing and no retraining required. Administrators can allow
users to install applications, customize their desktop environment and use local
printers and USB devices. Users also get better support with VDI because Help
Desk technicians can perform tasks in the data center that would normally require
an in-person visit.
- Virtual Desktop Manager (VDM) - VDM is an enterprise-class desktop management
server that securely connects users to virtual desktops in the data center and
provides an easy to use web-based interface to manage the centralized environment.
It is a flexible and intuitive desktop management server enabling IT administrators
to quickly provision and tightly control user access. With these operational
and security savings, customers realize a significant return on investment from
their VDI deployments.
- ThinApp - As part of an Enterprise Desktop Solution, ThinApp enhances the
benefits of a VDI implementation. ThinApp provides application virtualization
in both virtual and physical environments, enabling customers to deliver and
deploy applications more efficiently, securely, and effectively. On its own
VDI offers customers a tremendous opportunity to streamline and simplify desktop
management, and the addition of ThinApp takes this benefit even further, making
the process of installing, upgrading, and patching, software much easier. In
addition, ThinApp's technology results in sharply reduced costs in a VDI implementation
due to reduced storage requirements by making it possible to stream applications
over a network instead of having to store them on a user's PC.

What is ACE?
A new product from DSI stands to parlay its profitable virtualization
technology into the growing enterprise desktop management and security space.
Assured Computing Environment (ACE) allows IT administrators to easily provision
secure, preconfigured, standard PC desktops to remote workers, telecommuters,
offshore developers and contractors. As opposed to other thin-client approaches,
ACE lets customers apply corporate policies to a virtual machine containing
an operating system, enterprise applications and data, creating an isolated
and secure environment. The product enables centralized, secure management of
desktops, allowing IT managers, for example, to use its virtual rights management
technology to control and secure the entire ACE desktop life cycle, including
security settings, network settings, system configuration and user-interface
capabilities.
Please note that VDI and ACE are not integrated today. However,
they share a consistent set of benefits: manageability, end user control, and
a familiar user experience. They also share a common underlying technology as
they are both driven from leveraging virtual machines.

Overall, what does the technology of Desktop Optimization Package do to manage
desktops?
- Improving PC manageability and driving down TCO (Total Cost
of Ownership) by eliminating time-consuming processes, centralizing desktop
management, and better managing software assets.
- Quickly deploying and benefiting from the latest Microsoft software applications.
- Improving end-user uptime by ensuring that productivity impact is reduced
during deployments, upgrades or patching and minimizes downtime from PC problems.
- Reducing IT burden by enabling end-users to automatically get approved applications
and the newest software versions without local desktop intervention, and by
quickly monitoring, diagnosing, fixing and preventing PC problems.
- Effectively managing software asset inventory to ensure compliance and optimize
IT budgets.
- Enhancing desktop control and stability through centralized control of application
permissions and simple change management and rollback of Group Policy.
- Transforming static environments into a dynamic, services-oriented infrastructure
that more easily accommodates future changes.
